Moving Syncplify Server! to a different machine or VM
WARNING
This procedure applies only to Syncplify Server! v6 and later.
If you need to migrate your Syncplify Server! to a different or new machine or VM, keep in mind that this page explains the only correct procedure to do it.
No worries, it is easy. Follow these steps, in this exact order:
- Sign in to the SuperAdmin UI on the old machine or VM, the one you want to decommission, and take a full backup of the Syncplify Server! configuration (the Backup & Restore page in v8; a backup taken by v8 is sealed with a passphrase you choose, and you need it in step 5).
- Still in the SuperAdmin UI of the old machine, open the License page and use the Deactivate button, which frees your license so that it can be activated again on the new machine.
- Deploy a new machine or VM with a fresh operating system, and do not install anything else on it for now.
- Copy the backup file (a ZIP archive) to the new machine or VM, download the latest Syncplify Server! installer from syncplify.com/download and install it as you would for a new deployment.
- Once the installer is done, sign in to the SuperAdmin UI of the new Syncplify Server! and, in this exact order:
- activate the license first (the one you deactivated in step 2)
- restore the backup you took on the old machine, from the Backup & Restore page
Important
When you use the Deactivate function you free the license code so that it can be activated on another, different machine; you cannot activate it again on the machine you deactivated it from. The deactivation requires the server to be online, with direct, unrestricted, unproxied Internet access. If your server runs offline, contact us to have the license deactivated: see How to get support from Syncplify.
